At Leilani Bed & Breakfast, you'll enjoy affordable luxury, surrounded by the natural beauty of Hawaii's Big Island

Off the beaten path, Leilani Bed & Breakfast caters to the adventure traveler visiting the Big Island who wants comfortable, relaxing and affordable accommodations and the opportunity to explore the natural wonders of the southern end of the Big Island. Vacationers no longer have to feel rushed when traveling between Kona and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and further to Hilo. The Leilani Bed & Breakfast offers a beautiful and luxurious park-like retreat for seeing this "other side" of paradise.

The personality of this "hidden treasure" estate is set by the rock construction of the house, giving it a rustic look and feel amongst tropical gardens, green lawns, ohi'a-lehua trees and fantastic volcanic formations. The property borders on 3 huge lava tubes (pukas), a rare sight for those who love the beauty of nature.

Leilani Bed and Breakfast offers you, the traveler, an inexpensive whale watching experience on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is close to three great areas to view whales from the shoreline:

  • Southpoint (the turn off road is just 8 miles away)
  • The scenic outlook on the cliff south of Whitington Beach (just 20 minutes away)
  • Whiting Beach Park.

For a closer encounter with whales, we can give you pointers on local boat excursions, charters and tours. Whale watching in Hawaii starts here!

Bird watching is a treat here

...at Leilani Bed and Breakfast. The owners enjoy taking time out from their busy schedule to watch the antics of the birds. They are not birding aficionados, but they do have quite a list of sightings on the property. Everyday visitors to the feeders include: northern cardinals, saffron finches, house finches and their orange variant, zebra dove and the spotted dove. While revitalizing yourself in the Jacuzzi, see Japanese white eye or 'apapane honeycreeper feasting on the flowering trees. As you stroll through the grounds, you will join myna birds and our own pair of golden pacific plovers, who fly here from Alaska each fall to feast on our spacious fields, re-building their strength and growing their new mating plumage. They will fly back to Alaska in the spring ready to breed. They are being territorial and they will return here each spring. There are also occasional sightings of wild turkeys and kalij pheasants. Opportunities abound to see many more species nearby in the unusual setting of the Manuka State Park.

The property is agricultural and Leilani Bed & Breakfast boasts of using its own fresh fruits and nuts in season for breakfast. Among the "crops" are macadamia nuts, figs, papayas, pineapples, asparagus, coffee, oranges, lemons, strawberry guava and kumquats. Guests are invited to use our personal mac nut cracker to break open their own nuts and gain an appreciation for the price of these little gems offered in the shops.

For those interested in geology, explore the natural beauty of the area strolling through the grounds. For the adventure traveler in you, the area is quite exciting with various types and formations of lava, many left in their original condition when the land was cultivated.

Other activities you may enjoy while relaxing here are: stargazing, cooking on our built in covered barbeque, soaking in the Jacuzzi, reading a book out on the quiet lawn, socializing with other guests, lounging in our 900 sq. ft. enclosed garden lanai with a huge waterfall, or watching satellite television in the privacy of your own room. For those who want to stay in touch with folks back home, you may hook up your laptop to our wireless internet connection. We invite you to make yourself at home!

Meet Randy and Lynn:
Your hosts for a relaxing Kona bed and breakfast retreat!

We invite you to
read our blog.
Learn more about our little corner of paradise!

Your Hosts - Randy & LynnRandy and Lynn VanLeeuwen are truly a modern renaissance couple. Their sense of adventure led to their meeting in American Samoa in the South Pacific. Randy was on a decade long world adventure on his sailing vessel "Te Amo". Lynn had taken a respite from corporate America and was serving two years for the Peace Corp in Tonga, as Computer Services Advisor to the Crown Prince. They had a fairytale South Pacific romance and have now been happily married for 15 years.

Randy was born to be a deep sea sport fisherman. It is the second love of his life. "Lake Kona" is what drew him to Hawaii, one of the best deep sea fishing locations in the world.

Lynn is a business coach. She coaches business professionals, executives and entrepreneurs in the areas of leadership and performance. Since most of her work is done over the telephone, her work is very portable. Hawaii soothes her "water spirit" and provides a calming influence for her intense work. Lynn is also an artist and finds great inspiration for her painting here.

Together they moved to Hawaii and fell in love with the grandeur and spaciousness of the Leilani Bed & Breakfast. They successfully owned businesses together in the past and decided to make this their newest venture, incorporating all the "loves of their lives" together.

As extensive world travelers themselves, they love to meet new people. They understand the needs of the traveler and provide a very warm and hospitable experience for their guests.
