Kahuku Volcanoes National Park Extended Hours

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s newest area, the Kahuku Section, has now extended its hours of operation to include Fridays. The park works to offer more and more accessibility over the years with limited budget for expanding infrastructure and administration. After acquisition, this area remained closed to the public for many years with no budget to open it. Then it was opened on Saturdays and Sundays for several years with the aid of many volunteers. Within the last few months, they have now added accessibility on Fridays as well. For each of these days it is open from 9:00 AM to...

Green Sand Beach-A Must Pu’u to See

Leilani Bed and Breakfast is one of the few accommodations close to Green Sand Beach. In fact, it is a major attraction for many of guests. So here’s the scoop on this magnificent place. Pu’u Mahana In Hawaiian, it is called Pu’u Mahana. Pu’u means hill, or in this case cinder cone. Eroded by the sea, on one side, it forms a beautiful bay. The cone contains olivine, which eroded gives Green Sand Beach its beautiful color. One geologist who stayed with us said it is one of only two green sand beaches in the world. (Haven’t been able to verify that.) But in any...

A treat for Art Enthusiast Coming to Hawaii Island

Not something you would normally expect at a national park, but Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has an Art Center. They usually have a special exhibit every month, along with their regular displaying artists. But in addition, they have programs for the public: cultural, artistic, and educational. For many of these, your entrance fee into the park covers it. They also have the Niaulani “campus”, in Volcano Village, outside the park with other activities, including classes, concerts, and even yoga and meditation sessions. If you are an art aficionado or just enjoy good art, these are...

Bargain golf on Hawaii Island

Golf  is a major event on this island with many of the high end resorts having designer courses with pristine greens and beautiful views. A little known fact is that those of us on a budget can play golf on this island, too. We regularly go to Sea Mountain golf course at Punalu’u  Black Sand Beach. Not as spiffy as some of the other courses, but it does have a signature hole with a beautiful view of the Punalu’u bay, and you can golf for $25, cart included. This is only a 30 minute drive from the Leilani Bed and Breakfast, with some of the most fantastic coastal views on the...

What’s up with all the rain on Hawaii Island?

Yes, in this El Niño  year, Hawaii Island has been getting its fair share of rains. One after another, tropical storms have been parading past the whole island chain. Fortunately, none have landed and the storms from the outskirts of the whirling weather usually weaken by the time they affect us. Some flooding has occurred on other islands, but this island is still very young, with lots of surface lava to absorb the rains. Locals are impatient for the trade winds to return and reduce the humidity. But we are also blessed with a magnificent greening of the island from all the rain, a great...

Planning a Hawaiian Honeymoon?

The summer edition of “New York Magazine” contains an article on on what they call “once in a life-time road trips” for honeymooners. And among these 5 best places? The Big Island of Hawaii is top of the list! For each destination, they present a suggested itinerary. For the Big Island they recommend a day in Kona, and then using Leilani Bed and Breakfast as your base for two days, to explore this remote and exciting end of the island. We learned all of this from our guest honeymooners, who told us that they were doing the complete itinerary from the article, only...
